MIYAHARA, Kazuro.
Therapeutic effects of Toxoplasma lysate antigen (TLA) were studied in mice bearing the tumor in the second passage of 20-methylcholanthrene (MC)-induced tumor cells. Intramuscular administration of TLA 7 days after the tumor-cell inoculation caused apparent inhibition of the tumor growth on day 14. The second treatment facilitated the therapeutic effects. Intravenous transfer of spleen cells prepared from TLA-sensitized mice into tumor-bearing mice also represented the growth inhibitory effects. Prominent effects were seen when the transferred cells were prepared 5 days after sensitization of donor animals. The inhibitory effects were absent in the groups transferred only the adherent cells or the non-adherent cells prepared from sensitized mice. The...

A BIO-ECONOMIC DYNAMIC PROGRAMMING ANALYSIS OF THE SEASONAL SUPPLY RESPONSE BY FLORIDA DAIRY PRODUCERS AgEcon
Gao, Xiaoming; Spreen, Thomas H.; Delorenzo, Michael A..
Seasonal price premiums have been proposed as a means of dampening the highly seasonal patterns of milk production in Florida. A Markov decision bio-economic model of the breeding and replacement decisions was solved via stochastic dynamic programming and used to analyze the potential supply response to seasonal price premiums. The results of the analysis suggest that the seasonal milk supply in Florida is highly price inelastic.

A CASE STUDY OF PROMOTING FRESH BEEF THROUGH IN-STORE DEMONSTRATIONS AgEcon
Eastwood, David B.; Gray, Morgan D.; Brooker, John R..
In-store demonstrations are becoming a popular way of promoting foods at the retail level. However, little information is available to guide store managers and marketers in the design and implementation of these promotions. A test demonstration for shoulder and top blade steaks is used to estimate the effects of discretionary components of this promotional strategy. Marketing implications are drawn.

A CHECK-LIST ON THE INVASIVE SPECIES OF FORESTRY PLANTATIONS IN LOWER AMAZON, NW. Acta Amazonica
Pires,Maria Joaquina.
The work conelete of a survey of the mvaewe plants which appeared during the first six months of seedling stage in foreet plantations of second and third rotation, in the Jari area, Brazil. The resulting list showed two types of invasives: (1) true weeds - those cosmopolitan species that are typical of disturbed habitats; and (2) pioneer species - those which were probably remnants from the original natural vegetation of the studied area.

A CLASS OF SEPARABILITY FLEXIBLE FUNCTIONAL FORMS AgEcon
Driscoll, Paul J.; McGuirk, Anya M..
Quadratic flexible forms, such as the translog and generalized Leontief, are separability inflexible. That is, separability restrictions render them inflexible with regard to separable structures. A class functional forms is proposed that is flexible with regard to general production structures and remains flexible regarding weakly separable structures when separability restrictions are imposed, thus permitting tests of the separability hypothesis. Additionally, the restricted forms are parsimonious; that is they contain the minimum number of parameters with which flexibility can be achieved.

A comparison of dissolved and particulate mn and al distributions in the western north-atlantic ArchiMer
Yeats, Pa; Dalziel, Ja; Moran, Sb.
The dissolved Mn distribution on an oceanographic section along 50-degrees-W in the western North Atlantic shows decreasing concentrations in the offshore direction in the surface layer and with depth at the deep water stations. Leachable particulate Mn concentrations are low in the open ocean surface waters and elevated at intermediate depths. Dissolved Al concentrations in the surface layer are higher in the open ocean than on the shelf and the vertical distributions are characterized by surface maxima, a subsurface minimum at almost-equal-to 1 000 m and increasing concentrations in the deep waters. Leachable particulate Al concentrations are elevated on the shelf and in open ocean surface waters compared to the intermediate and deep waters. The Deep...

A COMPARISON OF MINNESOTA'S FARM BUSINESS MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION MEMBERS AND THE USDA'S FARM COSTS AND RETURNS SURVEY AgEcon
Andersson, Hans; Olson, Kent D..
Many states have farm record associations which collect individual farm data. This data are used for research, extension, and teaching purposes. However, since membership in the associations is voluntary, the question arises whether the members are representative of the population of all farmers in that area. This study compares farm record data collected through the Southeastern and Southwestern Minnesota Farm Business Management Associations (FBMA) and data obtained through the USDA's Farm Costs and Returns Survey (FCRS). Both data sets were for 1987. By design, the FCRS survey is not subject to the self-selection bias that may occur in the FBMA data. The objectives of this study are to: (1) determine which farm characteristics are statistically the same...

A COMPARISON OF SUBJECTIVE AND HISTORICAL CROP YIELD PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS AgEcon
Pease, James W..
Forecast distributions based on historical yields and subjective expectations for 1987 expected crop yields were compared for 90 Western Kentucky grain farms. Different subjective probability elicitation techniques were also compared. In many individual cases, results indicate large differences between subjective and empirical moments. Overall, farmer expectations for 1987 corn yields were below those predicted from their past yields, while soybean expectations were above the historical forecast. Geographical location plays a larger role than crop in comparisons of relative variability of yield. Neither elicitation technique nor manager characteristics have significant effects on the comparisons of the forecasts.

A comparison of the structure of ovules and seeds in Stemona (Stemonaceae) and Pentastemona (Pentastemonaceae) Naturalis
Bouman, F.; Devente, N..
Stemona and Pentastemona differ clearly in the size and structure of their ovules and seeds. Especially the development, shape, and cell wall thickenings of the endotestal cells, and by consequence the origin of the seed ridges, show marked differences. The embryological and seed anatomical characters support the proposal to give Pentastemona a family status.

A comparison of two techniques to discriminate continental origin of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) off West Greenland ArchiMer
Reddin, David; De Pontual, Helene; Prouzet, Patrick.
Two techniques of stock discrimination both utilizing scales, i. e. termed as classical technique and shape analysis, are compared for discriminating between North American and European Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) caught off West Greenland. Three scales from each of 60 salmon were analyzed: 30 from North American and 30 from European-origin salmon collected from home rivers in 1982. The best results indicated misclassification and error rates of 0% for shape analysis and 5.0% and ± 1.7%, respectively, for the classical technique. A nested ANOVA indicated that variation was greater between scales of salmon of North American and European origin than from several scales from the same salmon. It was concluded that shape analysis with computer-aided...

A Critique of Computable General Equilibrium Models for Trade Policy Analysis AgEcon
Hazledine, Tim.
The paper will deal in turn with three sets of modelling issues: the question of 'data'; the 'micro' problem of specifying market behaviour, and the. 'macro' issue of 'closing' the models in aggregate. I will conclude with some suggestions for future research. The basic theme of the paper is this: CGE modelling is essentially a conservative or 'neoclassical' scientific endeavour, and exhibits the strengths and weaknesses of neoclassicism. And as for the recent injection of apparently nonneoclassical imperfect competition or industrial organization (IO) concepts into CGE, though, as an 10 specialist myself I certainly welcome this in principle, I have doubts about the usefulness of the practice.
